Valentine’s Day is a great time to reach out to let your friends know that you care about them and are thinking of them.

Do you remember, when we were in elementary school, we would spend hours pouring through the valentines we received?

Valentine’s warm your heart and make you feel good. Why? It’s always nice to know that someone is thinking about you.

Designing a unique card for each of my girlfriends is part of my gift to them. I used watercolor paper to paint the card and attached a seed packet with an organza ribbon to the back of the card. How much fun is it that they can propagate the seeds into a small flower garden?

If you have seen any of the free-motion embroidery pillow projects that I have made, this project is similar. With free-motion embroidery, I loosely paint a design onto fabric and then highlight the shape with embroidery stitching.

My Valentine’s Day Card DIY is even easier. I painted watercolor paper with watercolor paint and outlined the details with an ink pen. That was it.

How simple is that?

Steps to Make the Painted Cards

Be sure to watch the video as it shows every step you will need to follow to make these cards.

I have said it before and I am going to say it again, do not try to make crafts that look perfect. I believe that crafts look better when they aren’t perfectly, perfect. It’s true!

I outlined the size of my card with a pencil on the watercolor paper. I used a standard card size as my template.

Next, I filled the water brushes with water and used them to apply the watercolor paint. One of my favorite color combinations is pink and orange. When it came time to choose colors for the flowers and hearts on the cards, I knew exactly what colors I wanted to use. You can choose any colors that you like.

Here are the three steps I followed to paint the hearts. After the paint is dry, use a fine-point black pen to loosely draw in the detail lines.

Cut the cards and erase the pencil lines. Attach the seed packets with a ribbon and place them in the envelope.

That’s it!
