Before you bought your Cricut machine you had tons of projects in your mind that you would make. After you bought your machine, you sat down at your desk with your machine and Cricut Design Space open and your mind went blank.
What should I create? Or even if you did have an idea of what to create, you didn’t have an exact design in mind.
I run into the same wall every so often and that’s why I’m writing this post, to help you find Cricut projects to make. Because I create blog post and tutorials on how to make different Cricut projects, I do a lot of research on the projects I want to make.
I then go to the store and buy the supplies, then come home and make those projects. So I have a process that I typically use for determining what Cricut projects I want to make.
I want to help you streamline your process of coming up with Cricut project ideas, designing (or buying) the svg files, buying your supplies and then making your project. So let’s jump right in.

Looking for Cricut project ideas – broad
I created this A-Z list of Cricut projects you can make or sell. This list is one of my top blog posts that people read. This list of 65 Cricut projects gives you an idea of the different things you can make with your Cricut.
While 65 projects gives you a starting point, you need to get to the next level. So first, choose a project on the list and move to the next level below. So let’s choose cake toppers.
Researching your Cricut project idea – specific
Now that you know that you want to create cake toppers, you can then go to Pinterest, Google, Etsy, the Cricut Project section in Design Space, your favorite craft store or Instagram or Facebook groups to get an idea of the type of cake toppers that exist.
My top 2 choices are always Pinterest and then Etsy. I use Instagram hashtags as a third alternative and Facebook groups as a fourth alternative. When I go to Pinterest I’ll type in cake toppers in the search bar. Before you click enter you’ll see a dropdown list that looks like this:
This list shows you things that people are looking for. You can see cake toppers for weddings are trending on Pinterest.
People also want to know how to make cake toppers with their Cricut machine. You can press the enter button now and you will see colored rectangles at the top of your Pinterest page which are highlighted in pink in the image below.
This will give you more detail on the type of cake toppers people are looking for. You can click the arrow to the right to scroll and see all the colored squares.

If you know the exact type of cake topper you’re looking for, you can type that in. Let’s say we’re looking for cake toppers for a baby shower. Now you can scroll through the different pins to get an idea of the type of design you can make.
Now we’ll hop over to Etsy to see the type of baby shower cake toppers that are available. Again, if you start typing baby shower cake topper in the Etsy search bar, you will see a dropdown list of the type of cake toppers people are looking for.
Let’s choose baby shower cake topper elephant. You can then scroll through the results to get an idea of the type of cake topper you want to make. Some of the results will be irrelevant but keep scrolling until you find something you like.

Designing your Cricut project – cake topper
After you have decided on a specific design for your Cricut project, you can design your svg file in Cricut Design Space or Adobe Illustrator yourself or you can buy the design online on Etsy, Creative Market or whatever other online store you use.
If you buy an svg file or design files online, and you want to sell that design on a tshirt, coffee mug, etc. be sure that you purchase or inquire about the licensing of the design so you won’t get into any legal trouble.
Materials to make your Cricut project – cake topper
Depending on the design you decided on and the type of Cricut machine you have, you’ll need to buy the materials to create your cake topper. Cake toppers can be made from a variety of materials including cardstock, wood, acrylic, and other materials.
Again, depending on the type of Cricut machine, you may or may not be able to cut certain materials.
Let’s say you want to make your cake topper out of cardstock, here are the materials you will need:
- Cardstock – glitter cardstock looks the best
- Glue sticks or double sided tape
- Cricut machine
- Cricut mats
- Wood skewers
I use this process every time I am looking for Cricut projects to make. It’s a simple combination of using different platforms to see what’s already out there. Obviously, you can put your own spin on your designs to make them unique.
