Heart Granny Square - The Crochet Swirl (2024)

In 2019 I made my Green Heart Granny Square Blanket. I have had lots of requests for the Heart pattern. The Heart Granny Square is basically a Granny Square. You can find the basic Granny Square pattern here – which includes a video tutorial for the basic Granny Square pattern.

On this page you will find a tutorial for how to make a Heart Granny Square. I have two versions to share with you – a narrow heart and wide heart – you can choose which one you prefer. The tutorial below is a photo heavy step-by-step guide.

The difference in the two is only small – the wide Heart Granny Square has 1 additional round.

Notes on the Heart Granny Square pattern

This pattern instructs you turn the work over after each round – I find this helps to keep the square even and it also makes the work reversible – and this is a technique that I like to use with all of my Granny Squares.

Whilst this pattern is simple, and uses the Granny Square pattern, the key to working the Heart shape is the use of different coloured yarn (yarn A for the heart, and yarn B for the area surrounding the heart). The yarn changes can be a bit fiddly; my method of colour change described below is introducing the new yarn on the final yarn over of the previous treble stitch, and then cutting the yarn at each colour change. This does mean that you have a number of ends to secure and then weave in. The groups of trebles in the next round hide the knots. If you prefer you can carry the yarn, or use your chosen method of colour change.

The two different versions are the same up to round three. The first two rounds are as per normal Granny Square. Round 3 has several colour changes to form the heart shape. For the narrow version, round four onwards are as for the normal Granny Square pattern. For the wide version you work an additional round of colour changes, before the normal Granny Square pattern from round five onwards.
