This C2C mesh market bag works up so quickly and it makes a fantastic beginner-friendly corner to corner crochet project. So beautiful yet simple to make, this is the perfect reusable market bag.
Crochet Mesh Bag Pattern details
Farmer’s markets are in full swing here in Kansas with loads of produce available – sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini and so much more. It is still hot, hot, hot here and I tend to enjoy heading to the market in the fall as it cools down and all things pumpkin head our way. But this bag is year-round market friendly!
Crochet mesh is perfect for market bags since it is so stretchy. I wanted to create a mesh stitch that could be crocheted on the diagonal so I wouldn’t have that large foundation chain to mess with. This stitch is absolutely perfect for this bag!

Once you have a square you will work around the outside edge and prepare handle edges by working two sides of decreases. This pulls the bag together while also creating an easy way to add your wood handles.
The wood handles makes this bag so strong and durable. You will be able to load this beautiful mesh french market bag with so much produce at the market! You could certainly crochet your handles instead if you so wish. I would recommend the crochet Romanian cord which is so strong and durable. I added three Romanian cords to my and I love them!
I purchased the wood handles I used at Amazon and there are several different kinds of bag handles that would be other fantastic options: oval bamboo handles, round bamboo handles or even these super cool rectangle shaped wood handles. So many different looks available!
I am using the durable and strong Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton* which is a medium weight 100% mercerized cotton yarn. Perfect cotton yarn for this project!

Abbreviations:
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc = double crochet
WS = wrong side
RS = right side
sl st = slip stitch

Special Stitches:
sc3tog= (insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop) three times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
sc2tog= (insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop) twice, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

- Pattern is worked in the double crochet corner to corner (c2c) technique, working rows of chains between end of row blocks.

Crochet Mesh Bag Pattern Instructions
ch 6
Row 1: (WS) 1 dc in fourth ch from hook and in each ch to end. (1 block)
Row 2: (RS) ch 6, dc in fourth ch from hook and in next 2 chs, flip row 1 block to sl st to top of ch-3 from last block of row 1, ch 3, 3 dc in ch-3 sp. (2 blocks)
Row 3: ch 6, dc in fourth ch from hook and in next 2 chs, flip work to sl st to top of ch-3 from last block of row 2, ch 5, sl st to top of ch-3 from first block of row 2, ch 3, 3 dc in ch-3 sp. (2 blocks + 1 ch-5 sp)
Row 4: ch 6, dc in fourth ch from hook and in next 2 chs, flip work to sl st to top of last block made in row 3, ch 5, sl st in third ch of ch-5 from previous row, ch 5, sl st to top of ch-3 from next block, ch 3, 3 dc in ch-3 sp. (2 blocks + 2 ch-5 sp)

Outside Edge of bag
Attach yarn to any corner of finished square.
Note: you will be working fewer stitches around the outside edge of the square in order to gather up the sides of your bag. You will be skipping one stitch of each 3 dc st block and only working 2 sc sts across the ch-3 of a block.
Work 2 sc sts across top of each block around all 4 sides of square. Place a stitch marker in first and last stitches of both sides 1 and 3. With a total of 44 blocks per side you will have a stitch count of 88 sc sts per side for a total of 352 sts. At end of round, sl st to first sc st made from side 1.
Handle Edge
Working between first set of stitch markers on side 1.
Row 1 (RS): ch 1, sc in first st, sc3tog to end. Turn. (30)
Row 2: ch 1, sc2tog, sc next 12 sts, sc2tog, sc next 12 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (27)
Row 3: ch 1, sc2tog, sc next 9 sts, sc2tog, sc next st, sc2tog, sc next 9 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (23)
Row 4 – 7: ch 1, sc in each st. Turn. (23)
Do not fasten off. Now working along edge of decrease rows just worked, sc at end of each row to side 2, sc in each st of side 2 to next st marker of side 3.
Repeat rows of handle edge on side 3.
Do not fasten off. Now working along edge of decrease rows just worked, sc at end of each row to side 4, sc in each st of side 4 to end.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Attach bag handles
Note: Handle edges are either Side 1 or Side 3 of bag.
With WS of bag facing, attach yarn to first st of top edge of handle edge with sl st, ch 1, working sc sts in sc stitches of last row of handle edge and around your bag handle to end. (23)
Fasten off.
Repeat steps for second handle on opposite handle edge of bag.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
