Beret Crochet Pattern | Vignola Beret + Scarflette Free Crochet Pattern (2024)

This women’s beret and scarflette crochet pattern has a vintage vibe. The tonal mustard color keeps this crochet set looking fresh and on season.

This set has been one of my most favorite makes! I love the flexibility of the hat-it can be adjusted to suit your liking.

The Heartland yarn from Lion Brand worked up so nicely. This is one of my favorite yarns to work with-it’s so soft, worsted weight and machine washable.

This mustard color was just a perfect match for this pattern too. Read on for the free pattern and details on what you need to crochet this beret and scarflette set.

Materials to crochet both the beret and the scarflette:

• 2 balls (251 yds/230m each) Lion Brand Yarn Heartland in Yellowstone*
• 5mm Hook size H* for hat and 6.5mm K hook for scarflette
• T-pins* or sewing pins for hat

Crochet Scarflette Details:

I began with Lion Brand’s free Necktie pattern here.* The recommended yarn was a bulky, but I wanted to use Heartland so I made some pattern adjustments.

Scarflette Materials:

Stitches in the Scarflette Pattern:

Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC): yarn over insert hook between the post of the stitch to be worked, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Pattern Adjustments:

1. I used size 6.5mm/K hook throughout.
2. Gauge with worsted weight yarn: 2″/5cm x 2″/5cm = 8 rows x 6 FPHDC; 4″/10cm x 4″/10cm = 17 rows x 12 FPHDC

Finished Measurements:

26.25″/66.7cm long from tip to tip

5″/12.7cm wide

The center rectangle measures 13.5″/34.3cm long (before the tails).

Pattern Adjustment Notes

1. I was able to follow most of the pattern as is, but I continued crocheting rows for the neck tie rectangle until I reached 5 inches wide, to compensate for the smaller yarn.
2. On Row 18 of the shaped end I SC2tog 2X instead of once.
3. Then I added Row 19: SC2tog and finished off.
4. After completing the shaped ends I sc evenly around the entire piece & finished off!

I think the Heartland yarn made an easy replacement for the bulky yarn. I didn’t have to make too many adjustments. You could also follow the Lion Brand pattern as is but use a bulky yarn instead. Visit their list of bulky yarns for a replacement here.

Women’s Crochet Beret Pattern

Materials

1 ball (251 yds/230m) Lion Brand’s Heartland in Yellowstone*.

5mm Hook size H* for hat

yarn needle

scissors

measuring tape

Stitches:

mc-magic circle

hdc-half double crochet

sl st-slip stitch

ch-chain

sc-single crochet

blo-back loop only– insert your hook into the back, or loop that is farthest away from you. Normally you would insert your hook under both top loops, for blo you crochet into only the back loop. Check out this ribbing for hats tutorial, for the step by step process.

hdc2tog-half double crochet two together-yarn over and insert your hook into the first stitch to be worked, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert your hook into the second stitch to be worked, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

Hat Pattern Notes:

1. Beginning ch 1 does not count as hdc.
2. Beginning ch 3 count as hdc + ch 1.
3. Beret pattern is worked in the round.
4. Finished beret measures 9.75″/24.8cm in diameter and is 8.5″/21.6cm tall.
5. Scarflette pattern is worked in rows.

Gauge:

2″/5cm x 2″/5cm = 7 hdc x 5 rounds of hdc

Womens Beret Crochet Pattern

Learn how to crochet a women's beret in Lion Brand Heartland yarn. This easy crochet hat pattern is customizable for your perfect fit.

Materials

• Crochet Hook size 5mm US H-8, or hook needed to meet gauge
• T-pins, or sewing pins
• yarn needle
• scissors
• measuring tape

Instructions

The Beret Band:

1. Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (8 sts)
2. Ch 1, in blo sc across, turn. (8 sts) For a step by step tutorial on how to crochet ribbing for a hat band check out this post.
3. Repeat last row 44 more times, or until 15.5″ unstretched. Check for best fit and add or subtract rows as needed. This pattern fits most adult women, (20"/50.8cm-22"/56cm head circumference).
4. Cut yarn and leave a long tail. Match short ends and sew together with tail to form the band.
5. Weave in ends. Set a side.
   

The Beret Pattern:

1. Start with a mc and hdc 8 into it, with a sl st join the last hdc to the first. (8 sts)
2. Ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch and in each around, sl st to join. (16 sts)
3. Ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch, hdc into the next, *{2 hdc into the next stitch, 1 hdc into the next} repeat from * around, join with sl st. (24 sts)
4. Ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch, 1 hdc into each of the next 2 stitches, *{2 hdc into next stitch, hdc into the next 2 stitches} repeat from * around, join with sl st. (32 sts)
5. Ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch, 1 hdc into each of the next 3 stitches, *{2 hdc into next stitch, hdc into the next 3 stitches} repeat from * around, join with sl st. (40 sts)
6. Ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch, 1 hdc into each of the next 4 stitches, *{2 hdc into next stitch, hdc into the next 4 stitches} repeat from * around, join with sl st. (48 sts)
7. Ch 3 (counts as hdc + ch 1), *{skip next stitch, hdc in next stitch, ch 1} repeat from * around, join to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3.
8. Ch 3, in 1st ch space place *{hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch 1} in each ch sp around, in last ch space hdc, ch 1, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3.
9. Ch 3, hdc in the same ch space, ch 1, *{hdc, ch 1} in each ch space around, skip last ch space, join to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3.
10. Rnds 10-12. Repeat Rnd 9.

13. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch and ch space around, join with sl st. (92 sts)

14.-15. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, join with a sl st. (92 sts)

16. Ch 2, starting in the same stitch *{hdc2tog, hdc in next stitch}, repeat from * around, join with sl st. (60 sts)

17. Ch 2, hdc in same and in each stitch around, join with sl st. (60 sts) Don’t finish off.

Attach the Band:

Pin the band to the open bottom of the beret (right sides together).

HDC evenly around through both thicknesses to join the band to the hat. To do so:

Insert hook through both layers (the ribbing and hat)

Yarn over and pull through both layers.

Continue to join ribbbing to hat with hdc around.

Finish off-cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
