Every Crocheter has their own preferred yarn type, and today we will dive into the world of cotton yarn. Cotton is the most eco-friendly yarn type, using natural resources to create the materials while not using animal products in the making.

That alone is why some people chose cotton above all else, but there are some practical reasons to choose this material too.

Different Types of Yarn

There are four different types of yarn that are universally used throughout the crochet world. Of course, other yarns exist, but they are not as well-loved or as widely available.

The first type is wool. Wool is an excellent choice for a beginner as they are pretty forgiving. They allow you to re-do your previous stitch without having to start all over again. This is also why some crocheters use wool when they practice a new design.

Acrylic yarn is the most commonly used type as it is very affordable and is available in many stores that don’t carry any other yarn types. However, acrylic is a kind of plastic, which means it has different characteristics depending on the ratio of plastic to wool or cotton in the yarn, so the use of it can be variable. That being said, the yarn is generally recyclable!

Crochet thread is a super-thin, which makes it perfect for delicate projects, like creating doilies. Their tiny threads allow you to make wonderfully small details.

And then there’s cotton, which is what we’re focusing on today! It’s a natural fiber, so it does require care different from that of acrylic yarns. But it can make for some truly gorgeous projects.

What Is Cotton Yarn Good For?

Cotton yarn is an inelastic fiber which means that there isn’t any stretch in the fabric. Because there isn’t any stretch, cotton isn’t as forgiving as wool.

But if your project needs to hold its shape, like a teddy bear, for instance, then cotton will be the perfect choice.

Cotton is also a wonderful insulator, and so would be the perfect choice for making warming clothes or blankets. Wool is also good for this task; however, wool is heavy in comparison to cotton. This means the light material of cotton is better for layering clothes, like socks, vests, or baby clothes.
